Surfing

A Wave of Aussie and South African surfies built up in the ‘70s around Tamarin. A surfing movie called The Forgotten Island of Santosha was also made. But the wave crashed and wiped out all interest in surfing during the ‘80s. The increasing cost of air travel to Mauritius didn’t help.

In the ‘90s. the low coast of self catering accommodation at Tamarin and better air travel opportunities could bring another swell of enthusiasm, especially in the south-west part of the island. During our research, we saw various surfers fanning out from the airport. Tim Williams, of Durban, South Africa, has described some of the surfing spots around Tamarin as "the perfect set up", with up to two metre waves.

The surfing season is from June to August.
